SD-WAN solutions: the flexible future of networking

These are challenging times for network administrators.

All of a sudden, staff are working from home in their droves. And almost as quickly, businesses are adopting the cloud as a core facet of their day-to-day strategy.

This raises questions. How do you keep remote users connected and those connections secure? And how can you deal with the bandwidth demands of cloud applications when, frankly, your network isn't built to cope?

Of course, if we had access to a magic lamp, we'd wish for a solution that was easy to set up remotely, had watertight security and could shift lots of data around without grinding to a halt. Oh, and Mr Genie… could you make it cheaper while you're at it?

Here's the thing. This isn't wishful thinking. This is SD-WAN.

With intelligent, rule-based routing, end-to-end encryption and fewer hardware overheads, SD-WAN ticks all the boxes that future-focused businesses need. No magic lamp required.

Plus, with our SD-WAN managed service, you get access to our first-class service level agreement and 24/7 expert support. Interested? Book a free, no-obligation consultation today to learn how SD-WAN can equip your business for the demands of modern networking.

SD-WAN Explained

What is SD-WAN?

The definition of SD-WAN is a "Software-Defined Wide-Area Network". Like any WAN, it allows businesses to connect securely across long distances. However, unlike traditional WANs, it handles the complicated stuff in software, rather than hardware.

In this sense, you can consider it an
evolution of WAN services like MPLS. It's a new(ish) kind of network architecture, built from the ground up for cloud connectivity.

Why switch to SD-WAN?

Two BIG reasons.

Firstly, because home working is on the rise. As employees expect a more flexible, less centralised approach to work, networking technologies need to adapt to keep up.

SD-WAN lets you bring the security and functionality of a business WAN into users' homes, without spending a fortune or moving an engineer in for five days. With SD-WAN, it's as simple as plugging in a specialised router, turning it on, and making a cup of tea while it sets itself up.

Secondly, because cloud services are no longer a future trend – they're here, and for many businesses, they're critical to success. Traditional WANs (like MPLS) aren't designed to handle the bags of bandwidth that cloud applications need. But SD-WAN, with its intelligent routing capabilities, lets users access the cloud as frequently as they need.

How SD-WAN works

With traditional WANs, your HQ may as well be the centre of the universe.

If users at another branch need access to the internet, it has to be routed through HQ first. For day-to-day browsing, this isn't a problem. For high-bandwidth cloud applications, it's a proverbial pain in the posterior.

SD-WAN works differently. It's built on clever software that prioritises and routes connections on the fly. It can harness all sorts of technologies – like broadband internet and mobile WiFi – to find the fastest route for every connection. This means a smoother experience for users, and less bandwidth demands on HQ.

This
doesn't mean users are accessing stuff over the public internet. SD-WAN treats everything like it's part of your business network, with all of the security you'd expect from a modern WAN.

SD-WAN Solutions for your Business

Migrating from MPLS to SD-WAN

If you're thinking of making the switch from MPLS to SD-WAN… great!

Migration is fairly simple, at least as far as networks go. We'll visit you on-site to set up the necessary hardware, and we'll be on call 24/7 to help you iron out any issues as you go.

But… and we're going to throw a curveball here… do you
need to migrate completely?

One of the benefits of SD-WAN is that it can work beautifully alongside existing network infrastructure, like – yes – MPLS.

It's fabulously flexible. Many businesses, for instance, choose to keep their MPLS setup at HQ but implement SD-WAN for home workers and temporary or remote offices.

And best of all, even by using a hybrid solution like this, you could
cut networking costs by up to 52%.

Not sure what approach would work for your business? Give us a call – we love talking about this stuff.

SD-WAN business benefits: in detail

We've already seen how SD-WAN can help businesses incorporate critical cloud technologies and keep things secure and snappy for home workers.

But that's only a small slice of the good stuff. Here are some more great benefits for business users:

Optimised routing

Our SD-WAN service chooses the most optimal path for every connection, including via end-to-end encrypted internet breakout. Plus, with bandwidth aggregation, multiple paths can be used simultaneously, allowing for new heights of network efficiency.

Fully customisable

SD-WAN's intelligent routing works to YOUR rules. Using its intuitive software dashboard, you can choose the best path for each application based on business priority, time of day, and many other factors.

Rock-solid resiliency

More routing options means more failover paths. Our SD-WAN reroutes traffic so quickly, users might not even notice.

Robust reporting

Because SD-WAN manages connections in software, you can access detailed reports that span all users and all network technologies. Plus, with real-time monitoring and control, it's easy to prevent mishaps before they happen.

Affordable and flexible

With SD-WAN, you can enjoy the security and functionality of a traditional wide-area network, without expensive hardware overheads or complicated, time-consuming setups. And because it's software-based, updates can be delivered securely online.

Why choose an SD-WAN managed service?

Our SD-WAN service is fully managed as standard. Put simply, this means we provide the necessary hardware and software, for which you pay a monthly subscription – just like a business broadband connection.

We truly believe this is the best option for most organisations. Because we manage the service, you're covered by our industry-leading service level agreement. Plus, you benefit from a dedicated account manager, who'll work hard to understand your business and its needs.

Why become cyber security certified

Simply put, it's a no brainer...

Being fully managed means avoiding unnecessary hassle. Remember, SD-WAN is a new and developing technology.

It's unlikely you have experts in house who know the system inside out. Our engineers do, and they're on hand to help, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is SD-WAN used for?

SD-WAN has many uses. Because it's easy and affordable to set up, it's often used to connect home workers to an organisation's wider network. It's great for high-bandwidth applications like SaaS and video conferencing too.

  • What is the difference between WAN and SD-WAN?

WAN stands for "Wide-Area Network". SD-WAN is a type of WAN that uses a software layer to handle connections and security. This has lots of benefits, including intelligent routing – for a faster, more reliable user experience – and easy network maintenance.

  • What is an example of SD-WAN?

Here's an example setup. Say a business wants to pursue a multi-cloud strategy (using several SaaS and IaaS applications) and allow for employees to work flexibly between home and headquarters. An SD-WAN would allow this without expensive hardware overheads or temporary fixes like VPN.

  • What's the difference between MPLS and SD-WAN?

SD-WAN and MPLS are both types of wide-area network. The main difference is that SD-WAN handles in software what MPLS handles using hardware. This means SD-WAN is cheaper and easier to set up and is smarter when it comes to managing high-bandwidth loads.

  • What is SD-WAN security?

Any SD-WAN worth its salt should have enterprise-level security features built-in. With our service, you can expect end-to-end encryption at every stage, utilising technologies like VPN, IP security and next-generation firewalls.

  • What is the best SD-WAN solution?

Well, we're hardly going to say "go elsewhere" are we? But seriously, we reckon our SD-WAN service is the best around because it offers cutting-edge security and connection management, backed by our five-star service and 24/7 helpline.

  • What problems can SD-WAN solve?

Many! The most common are a) allowing for secure, flexible working, b) ensuring your network can handle cloud applications and c) cutting costs (by up to 82%, according to one study!).

  • Is SD-WAN better than a business VPN?

The difference between a VPN and SD-WAN can be confusing. Both are software-defined networks, after all. The key difference is that VPNs are often used on top of a business network to encrypt traffic, while an SD-WAN is the network, and has encryption built-in. Each has its uses, but we reckon SD-WAN is better for business use because it includes useful features that you just can't get with a VPN alone.
